I currently have 2.5 inch exhaust that dumps at the rear axle with some cheap V force turbo muffs. I cannot hear the gear drive over the exhaust from inside the car or standing in front of the car with the hood open. Summers Bros, Milodon, etc. Jackson, Edelbrock quiet is one with a small amount of backlash between the gearsets, noisy is one that is pre-worn out, loose and both are pure junk, plain and simple. I can hold the brake in gear and throttle it and it will have the clacking noise. I thought it was in the trans, but i had a new trans built for it and the noise is still there.

I had this happen last year. starter was just loud.. rebuilt or new this shim / gap check is required. check that you have .125 gap between the starter shaft and the top of the flywheel tooth. that is a start point.
